Many of the State's best young bass anglers fished head to head to qualify for BASS and TBF berths in a National Championship for TBF, and for the Western Divisionals for BASS. This event is the first of two qualifiers in 2010. A warm spring day greeted these competitors and a week of fair weather and rising water temperatures was sure to be a challenge. Jeff Abernathy representing TBF conducted the meeting and the draw and then launched several boats each with a pair of young anglers.


Many of the day's competitors have fished these events for the past several seasons and some of these youth are past champions. The competition included two age groups- 11 to 14, and 15 to 18, with the winner representing Oregon in each age group. Would past champions repeat or would new champions emerge?

At 2pm the weigh-in began and Desmond McVay weighed a couple of smallmouth for his third consecutive 11-14 year old division win dating back to April 2009. Desmond and 2009 15-18 age winner Josh Creamer were off to Divisionals the next week. Winning the very competitive 15 - 18 year age group on this day in his first year in the bracket, was Nick Chin. Nick drop shot shallow water in various locations and had a limit of 10.18lbs- 2lbs more than second place finisher former champ Nathan Bromley with 8.14. Third place went to Josh Abernathy with a limit of 7.76lbs.
